Salted coffee for the Turkish groom

Salted coffee for the Turkish groom

Turkish coffee continues to play a significant role in wedding rituals today, especially during the pre-wedding meetings between the groom's and bride's families. In the past, this was often the only opportunity for the future bride and groom to meet.

The bride's act of serving coffee, along with her choice of adding sugar or salt, has been a traditional method of expressing her feelings or testing the groom's reaction.

Sugar was a symbol of fondness and hospitality, while adding salt was a way to subtly indicate disapproval. Over time, this practice has evolved, and today, some brides might intentionally serve salty coffee to test the groom's reaction or to create a playful moment. The groom's willingness to drink the salty coffee with a smile can be seen as a demonstration of his commitment, patience, and sense of humor.
